Whether your restaurant offers 4 for $4 promotions or provides guests with an extensive wine list, one item you always want to serve is proper lighting. Restaurant lighting of any capacity needs to be warm, inviting, and consistent with your brand. But how do you create the perfect recipe for success?
Well, the first step of any great recipe is to make a list of any items you may need. Quick Serve
Quick serve restaurants typically have efficient, inexpensive general lighting. The fixtures are commonly overhead fluorescent lighting – often 2’ x 4’ or 2’ x 2’ troffers – that use either T8 or T12 tubes.
Linear Fluorescent Tube (T8)
Technical Jargon:
- Shape: T8 (1" diameter)
- Base: Bi-pin (G13)
- Length: 1 foot to 4 foot
- Wattage: 13W to 32W, based on length

Fast Casual
Fast casual restaurants tend to incorporate a variety of fixtures. Pendant lighting hangs from the ceiling and is positioned over bars, tables, or other focal points of the restaurant. Pendants usually require a standard light bulb (A19 shape) with a standard screw-in base (E26, or “Edison” base).

You may also have specialty light bulbs like a "silver bowl" or "silver crown" bulb, which look like this:
Wall sconces are also popular among fast casual restaurants. These fixtures provide accent lighting and are typically used to border artwork or mirrors. Wall sconces generally require a standard light bulb (A19), but it’s also common to see fixtures that use a torpedo shaped bulb (B10, B11).

If you have a torpedo bulb, be sure to double check the base – If it's smaller than a standard light bulb, it's most likely a candelabra (E12) base.
Fine Dining
Fine dining restaurants cater to upscale clientele and provide a high quality, unique experience. Ambiance is the first step in achieving that certain je ne sais quoi. Most fine dining restaurants use an array of fixtures to create such ambiance.
Recessed lighting provides soft illumination throughout a room and may use a variety of bulbs (MR16, PAR20, R20, BR30). Here are a couple of common bulbs we see:
4" Recessed Can Bulb (R20)
Technical Jargon:
- Shape: R20 (2 1/2" diameter)
- Base: Medium (E26)
- Wattage: 30W to 45W

Technical Jargon:
- Shape: BR30 (3 3/4" diameter)
- Base: Medium (E26)
- Wattage: 45W to 75W

Accent lighting is used to add drama to a fine dining space. Focal points are created with accent fixtures and use reflector bulbs (MR16, PAR20, PAR30, etc.) to create a direct beam of light.
Finally, pendant lights are used to provide task lighting – mainly for guests when reading menus. Pendant fixtures can use either a standard light bulb (A19 shape) or a round globe light bulb (G25 shape) with a standard screw-in base (E26, or “Edison” base). Some restaurants will also use a silver bowl A19 in pendants to reduce glare at the table.
